You should use Windows Movie Maker, its probably already included in your computer! With it you can split your movie into parts, add sound, and create different effects. The default file format of Windows Movie Maker is .WMV, which youtube accepts. It also accepts the following: .3GP (cell phones), .AVI (windows), .MOV (mac), .MP4 (ipod/psp), .MPEG, .FLV (adobe flash), .SWF (shockwave flash), .MKV (h.264).
So you should have no problem with the video format and shouldn't need to convert the video, especially if you use Windows Movie Maker.
